Unphysical 11-µm top-of-troposphere emissivity due to erroneous GFS tropopause height
The 11-µm top-of-troposphere emissivity (emiss_tot; "Emiss_Tot_ProbSevere
" variable from enterprise_clouds_mpav repo) from the enterprise_cldphase_10_11_13_14_15
algorithm is generating unphysical emiss_tot on GOES-16 data, due to erroneous GFS tropopause height. In this case (see attached image), the GFS trop. height was much too high. This was a dynamic event, with most likely a steep gradient in the tropopause height.
This will cause problems if we want to use emiss_tot to identify and track overshooting tops, and could cause problems with bad observed growth rates in ProbSevere.
